What Are N95 Dust Masks?

Definition and basics of N95 masks

The N95 mask is one of 9 types of particulate protective masks certified by NIOSH. "N" means not resistant to oil. "95" means that when exposed to a specified number of special test particles, the particle concentration inside the mask is more than 95% lower than the particle concentration outside the mask. The value of 95% is not an average value, but a minimum value. N95 is not a specific product name, as long as the product meets the N95 standard and passes the NIOSH review, it can be called "N95 mask". The protection level of N95 means that under the testing conditions specified by the NIOSH standard, the filtering efficiency of the mask filter material for non-oily particles (such as dust, acid mist, paint mist, microorganisms, etc.) reaches 95%. Therefore, it is widely used in personal protection commonly used for some airborne diseases, and the shape of the mask is cup-shaped or folded.

N95 masks are tested with 0.3 micron sodium chloride particles, and the barrier rate must be more than 95%. When the wearer's face is tested for tightness, it is ensured that the air can enter and exit through the mask when it is close to the edge of the face. Only those who meet this test are issued an N95 certification number.

In addition to the filtration efficiency of the mask, the tightness of the mask and the face is one of the important factors that determine the effect of the mask. Different types of masks have great differences in the suitability of the human face. Therefore, before using the mask, the suitability test of the mask should be carried out first. When the wearer's face is tested for tightness, it is ensured that the air can enter and exit through the mask when it is close to the edge of the face.

N95s are critical to protecting healthcare workers who provide direct patient care. Not only do they have to be in close contact with patients, but they also routinely perform procedures such as ventilator intubation, which generate large numbers of aerosol particles, increasing their risk of infection.
