The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend that the general public wear face shields or goggles to protect against the novel coronavirus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially recommends that in areas of "moderate to severe community transmission," health care workers should wear eye and face protection, known as face shields, in addition to masks.
If you choose to wear a protective face shield, the CDC recommends that you make sure they fit properly and wash and sanitize them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
If you choose to wear eye protection, i.e. a face shield, make sure it has to fit correctly, once put on, it should also cover all of your face – top, bottom and sides with very little adjustment.
If you're going to wear a face shield, the CDC further recommends that you choose a head-on face shield, one that wraps around the sides of your face and extends below your chin.
When to wear a face shield?
All are required to wear face shields when leaving their homes, and they cannot maintain a 6-foot physical distance between themselves and others, including:
In interactions with other people, close contact is inevitable
Shopping at grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retail businesses
Visit any facility that requires a face covering to enter
Pick up food from the drive-thru or curbside
Pass through apartments, commercial lobbies and elevators
6 feet of social distancing is impossible when walking on sidewalks, in parks and in other shared spaces
by public transport
Visit a health care provider
People who are sick should wear face coverings at home, especially if they need to be within 6 feet of others who share their home. People who are sick and need to leave home, such as those receiving emergency medical attention, should always wear a face covering.
